The creators of the project want to tell the story of humor, stubbornness, and dedication of the Ukrainian military, who continue to be ordinary people while doing the most unimaginable things.
Director of Photography Pavlo Lypa says:
“The topic of humor in war is currently practically absent in Ukrainian documentary cinema. However, having filmed and talked to the military at the front and in the rear, we have always seen one thing – as soon as the initial ice of acquaintance is broken, jokes and funny stories start flowing. That’s why we decided to explore this phenomenon through documentary filmmaking, trying to figure out how the soldiers adapted to the realities of the Great War through various jokes, sarcasm, banter and satire.”
The filming of “Standing Our Ground” took place last fall and winter in Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. The film also uses video footage provided by the military themselves.
The project was created with the support of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation.
“We support veteran projects in the field of culture because this is how we help defenders record and share their experiences. These projects are important not only now, but will be relevant even in decades to come,” says Ruslana Velychko-Tryfoniuk, Acting Executive Director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation.
