Ukrainian veterans can take free English courses with native speakers

The American Foundation “People of Ukraine” together with the Ukrainian Veteran Foundation of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine is launching English language studying courses for Ukrainian veterans.

Courses are adapted to the level of language proficiency and special needs of veterans. For example, defenders who have lost their sight can learn, because programs for reading audio have been additionally developed. In addition, the courses will be held online, so those who have been injured and are undergoing rehabilitation can join.

“The educational program lasts 3 months. Lessons will be held in the evening, twice a week, lasting 45 minutes each. The course will be taught by qualified American teachers with many years of experience in American schools. The training takes place online with the help of the Zoom video conferenceі” says Tetyana Shay, head of the People of Ukraine Foundation.

Training is free, and upon completion of the courses, participants will receive appropriate certificates.

“It can be difficult for veterans to concentrate on their studies now. However, it is worth finding personal motivation that will help you pass the course. After all, by acquiring new skills, we strengthen our own capabilities and expand the horizons of possibilities. And this is very important for a better life in the post-war reality,” says Natalia Kalmykova, The Executive Director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation.

Training will start on April 25, 2023. You can register between March 25 and April 15, 2023. The number of places is limited.

Selection of applications for the #VARTO “Doing your own” veteran business financing program has started.

On March 24, the selection of applications for the veteran business financing program #VARTO “Do Your Own” begins.

Veterans, as well as relatives of fallen defenders, can receive from 500,000 to 1.5 million hryvnias for starting or developing their own business. The total budget of the competition is 15 million hryvnias.

The contest is launched by the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs in partnership with the “MHP – Community” charity fund.

“We support the business opportunities of veterans and their families. That is why we are launching the macro-financing program for the third time. In 2022, the UVF will hold two macro-financing contests, and 53 winners received financing in the amounts ranging from 500,000 to one million hryvnias. We hope that this annual program will be able to support even more smaller enterprises in the food sector,” says Nataliya Kalmikova, the executive director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation.

The project #VARTO “Doing your own” is implemented in partnership with the “MHP – Community” charitable foundation. This foundation has been supporting micro-enterprises in the regions for several years in a row. Last year, 85 business ideas in the field of foods, processing, agro-industry and other areas received financing for 7.4 million UAH.
“Ukraine’s recovery must begin now. Not after the victory, but already today, we are teaching the community to think strategically, to plan its own development, to develop partnerships between business and donors. An integral part of this process is the integration of veterans and their families into the community economy. After all, they are highly motivated and know how to see and find non-standard solutions to overcome challenges. Therefore, the creation of a favorable ecosystem for the development of their business ideas will strengthen the economy of the community, the region and globally in all of Ukraine,” emphasizes Tetyana Volochai, director of the charitable foundation “MHP – Community”.

Applications will be accepted from March 24 to April 10, 2023. Legal entities, as well as individual entrepreneurs, can participate.

The UVF presented an analytical study on the veteran policy experience of the United Kingdom

The Ukrainian Veterans Foundation examined the veteran policy of the United Kingdom – a new study “State policy of veteran support: the experience of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” was published.

Yes, in 2022 there were 2 million veterans in the United Kingdom. According to forecasts, their number will decrease to 1.6 million by 2028. In Ukraine, on the contrary, the number of veterans will increase. A special “surge” occurs after a the start of the full-scale invasion.

Britain’s veteran support policy focuses on four areas:

Employment. The Ministry of Defense finances a special employment program for veterans. 86% of those who used it got a job within six months

Mental health. The country is investigating whether the number of suicides among veterans is proportional to other segments of the population. They also have a special Alliance for the health care of veterans and their families, which is 49 hospitals and ambulances. They prepare general practitioners to understand the needs of veterans and their families. There is a special form of accreditation.

Crime prevention. In 2019, only 3% of new arrivals in prison are ex-servicemen. However, the United Kingdom has a special program to support veterans in prisons and their rehabilitation.

Housing. The state tries to help veterans when they are at risk of losing their homes. Such support at an early stage helps to avoid homelessness. Therefore, the number of homeless veterans decreased from 6% in 2014 to 2% in 2018. Priority housing assistance is given to the seriously injured and those in urgent need

The UVF together with “MHP – Community” launches new funding program of veteran businesses

The Ukrainian Veterans’ Fund of the Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs together with the charity fund “MHP – Communities” presented the concept of the #Varto “Doing Your Own” financing program, which will be launched soon.

Under this program, veterans, as well as relatives of fallen defenders, will be able to receive from 500,000 to 1.5 million hryvnias to start and develop their own business.

The total budget of the competition is 15 million hryvnias.

“The list of industries forming the world economy also includes agriculture. The agricultural sector and the food industry embody revolutionary transformations. The number of people on the planet is growing, so new ideas are needed to protect the world from hunger. Ukraine is positioned as a country focused on the food industry of world importance, so new technologies are being implemented here the fastest, and there is a transition from extensive to intensive agriculture. Where, for example, drones are becoming an integral part of the industry. We are focused on the introduction of new technologies that do not require a lot of manual labor. Fortunately, it is the veteran business that implements innovations and technologies the fastest, because they have already dealt with the latest technology on the battlefield, so they are not afraid to work with it in civilian life,” says Ruslana Velychko-Trifonyuk, first deputy executive director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation.

During 2022, the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation held two macro-financing contests, in which 53 winners received financing in the amount from 500,000 to 1000000 UAH.

This year, the veteran business support project is being implemented in partnership with the “MHP – Community” charitable foundation. The Foundation has been supporting micro-entrepreneurship in the regions for the last several years. Last year, “MHP – Community” financed the opening and development of 85 businesses for UAH 7.4 million in 11 regions of Ukraine.

“For our Foundation, cooperation with the UVF and the Ministry of Veterans became not just a logical continuation of the “Do Your Own” competition, but a matter of honor. Supporting and helping military personnel and their families is one of the vectors of our activity. The restoration of Ukraine will not begin after victory. This process is already underway. And the quality of life of all our future generations depends on what kind of environment, what ecosystem in communities we create for those who protect us on the front lines. Because veterans should know: people are waiting for them. Families, communities, Ukraine. They are needed,” emphasizes Tetyana Volochai, director of the “MHP — Community” charitable foundation.

In addition to funding, veteran entrepreneurship will also receive support at the legislative level.

“We are working on the regulation of veteran business initiatives at the legislative level. During the crisis, it was exactly the veteran business that did not relocate, but remained working in Ukraine, creating jobs and helping the economy. So we have to do everything to support these initiatives,” says Maksym Kushnir, director of the department of civic identity and veteran development.

One of the winners of the previous funding program of the Ukrainian Veterans Fund was a veteran entrepreneur, Oleksandr Kvyatkovskyi, who is developing a business in the field of agricultural drones.

“Those farms where the fighting took place are trying to use tractor tillage as little as possible. It takes more than one year for thorough demining, and here the drone is a safer alternative to the tractor: there are fewer passes of heavy equipment, and there are fewer chances of hitting a mine or an unexploded shell,” says Oleksandr Kvyatkovskyi.
