“90% OF UKRAINIANS TRUST THE MILITARY AND VETERANS”, – SURVEY RESULT

According to Ukrainians, society is now dominated by pride and gratitude to veterans who protect the country.

This was stated by the Executive Director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation Nataliya Kalmykova during the presentation of the sociological survey “Image of veterans in Ukrainian society”. The survey was conducted by the “Rating” group at the initiative of the Ukrainian Veterans’ Foundation of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine.

“The idea of the survey was born when it was realized that with the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the number of people undergoing military service, as well as the number of families of fallen soldiers, changed. The changes are significant. We will periodically conduct such surveys in order to understand the situation, respond in time with changes and development of support policies and information campaigns,” says Nataliya Kalmykova, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation.

It is predicted that at the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the number of veterans and their families and family members of the dead will reach 5 million

“We are completely changing the approach to the state’s provision of social guarantees to veterans. We are moving away from benefit-oriented programs and providing tools that defenders will be able to use,” says Oleksandr Porhun, First Deputy Minister of Veteran Affairs of Ukraine. — We are developing a transition system from a military career to a civilian one. Now this bill has already been sent to the president for signature. According to the results of the survey, it was understood that people are most worried about the possibility of unemployment. The UVF has already developed programs to support veteran businesses. The Foundation is developing new grants and projects that will enable veterans to create new businesses. We are establishing a new veteran enterprise based on the formula “defender works for defender”, which will expand employment after victory.”

At present, 40% of respondents believe that the salary level of military personnel directly participating in hostilities is optimal, 32% are convinced that the salary is lower than the required level, and a small part – 11% – consider it to be higher.

“The key markers of understanding the image of a veteran have already been formed. Half of Ukrainians have relatives who are related to the issues of the war or participated in it. Most of these people are among the youth who are currently fighting. It’s a shift in emphasis on who a veteran is: that it’s not an older person, but younger people. 46% of respondents associate veterans as participants of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO). However, young people more often support the stereotype that a “veteran” is a participant in the Second World War”, – Lyubomyr Mysiv, deputy director of the Rating Sociological Group.

“90% of surveyed Ukrainians trust the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, veterans of the current war and veterans of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) of 2014-2021. 64% of respondents feel gratitude and 50% pride towards the veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war,” adds Mysiv.

On August 6-7, 2022, the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation together with the Sociological Group “Rating” conducted a survey among Ukrainians regarding society’s understanding of the image of veterans. Sample population: 1000 respondents. Survey method: CATI. The error of representativeness of the study with a confidence probability of 0.95: no more than 3.1%.

MEETING WITH THE UVF WITH PUBLIC ORGANIZATIONS: COOPERATION FOR VETERANS

“We believe in you!” are probably some of the most important words we can hear about our work.

Today, we met and talked with representatives of public organizations and veterans’ initiatives about joining forces, sharing experience, jointly developing mechanisms to cover all areas where we will be needed and useful to our target audience – veterans, their families and family members of the deceased.

We at the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation strive to be open and sensitive to the needs of veterans and their families. Because we work for them. It is important for us to move in the right direction.

Thank you to the participants who came to the meeting online and offline and talked about their own experiences.

We know that this is far from the last such event, so follow our news and join the next meetings!

“I AM A VETERAN”: THE UKRAINIAN VETERANS’ Foundation LAUNCHED AN INFORMATION CAMPAIGN

The Ukrainian Veterans Foundation has launched an information campaign “I am a veteran”. In all regions of Ukraine, you can see billboards and streetlights with photos of young men and women who have been defending the country since 2014, and now have returned to war.

“We stop the romanticisation of war and want to forever bury the Soviet vision of the image of a veteran. This social action should change society’s perception that veterans are old men wearing medals. And if you did not die for Ukraine, then you are not a hero. For Ukraine, every life of our defenders is valuable. Therefore, in the information campaign, we showed young men and women who are fighting for the freedom of Ukraine,” says the head of the Foundation, Nataliya Kalmykova.

Young defenders took part in the filming for the information campaign, which broke the society’s perception of the image of a veteran as an elderly person. At the age of 25 in Ukraine, a person may well have combat experience behind his shoulders.

“On board you can see people who have already gone through the hell of war once, and now they have returned there again. That’s why we reinforce the photos with the slogan “Yes, I am a veteran and I continue to defend,” says Nataliya Kalmykova.

Images on social networks were added to the information campaign with outdoor advertising.

Previously, the Ukrainian Veterans’ Foundation launched a flash mob #позывнийУкраїна (call sign Ukraine), within the framework of which it collected stories of civilians who left everyday life and became military. These media activities are necessary to form a new image of a veteran in society.

“Half a million people have already been mobilised, and we can mobilise as many more if necessary,” said the commander of the “South” operational command, Major General Andriy Kovalchuk. But this figure does not take into account the involved defenders from the National Guard, the Security Service of Ukraine, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, the State Border Service, the State Special Transit Service, the Military Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Federal Security Service, the State Security Police Department, the State Special Service, the State Emergency Service, the State Criminal Enforcement Service, Volunteer and other military formations , which became part of the Armed Forces/Ministry of Internal Affairs/National Guard.

According to the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Hanna Malyar, more than 50,000 women are currently serving in the Armed Forces, including 5,000 on the front lines.

The Minister of Veteran Affairs of Ukraine, Yuliya Laputina, emphasises that by February 24, 500,000 combatants were registered. Currently, more than 770,000 people with the status of a participant in hostilities are recorded in the register of the Ministry of Social Policy. After the Russian-Ukrainian war, even more young men and women who protect Ukraine with their lives will acquire the status of war veterans. The estimated number of future veterans is up to 5 million.

#ПОЗИВНИЙ УКРАЇНА (call sign Ukraine): A PROJECT FROM THE UKRAINIAN VETERANS Foundation

The Ukrainian Veterans Foundation, together with the artist Nikita Titov, is launching the media project #позивнийУкраїна. Within its framework, the organisers plan to show and tell the public the stories of those who stand in defence of Ukraine.

Currently, the Ukrainian army has people of various professions, not just military personnel. Men and women who yesterday were teachers, drivers, programmers, today defend Ukraine as part of the Armed Forces.

“We want to dedicate a series of images to Independence Day. Today, hundreds of thousands of people are fighting for independence at the front. Someone five months, someone a week, someone nine years. All of them left their usual lives and took a military oath. Our society and the world community should know the history of our defenders. Each of their small stories is a part of the big story being written today,” say the organisers.

On the pages of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation, Nikita Titov’s thematic drawings with various professions of people in civilian life will be published. Everyone can recognize themselves, their neighbour, a classmate or a barista from their favourite coffee shop.

“Ukrainian defenders are not only professional soldiers, but ordinary people of various professions who put on military uniforms because they stand for their land and world values. We will show a series of images with the stories of our fighters that the whole world can try on. To understand what it’s like when just yesterday you were a barista, bus driver, activist or businesswoman, and today you understand how a bayraktar works,” adds Nataliya Kalmykova, executive director of the foundation.

The organisers invite you to join the project and, using the hashtag #позивнийУкраїна, publish your own stories or stories about your loved ones, friends, work colleagues who went to defend Ukraine as part of the Armed Forces.

The project is about people who bring victory closer. And while the military is making history today, the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation is worried about their tomorrow.

The hotline can be called by veterans, members of their families – people who find themselves in critical situations and need crisis support here and now.

“Before the launch of the line, the Foundation team prepared especially responsibly. More than 30 qualified professionals with experience in providing emergency assistance in crisis situations underwent a two-week training before launching the hotline. Veterans and their families can call when they are in dire straits, when they need someone to listen, someone to be there, someone to help and support just a phone call away. Our line is of immediate help,” says the Executive Director of the UVF Nataliya Kalmykova.

The chief specialist of the crisis assistance and support hotline of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation, psychologist, candidate of psychological sciences Olena Lashko emphasised that the training process of the hotline specialists has already been completed.

Specialists who will work on the hotline are selected based on their professional sense, personal values and motivation to provide help to those who need it. Each of them is aware of the importance of the cause to which they are involved, and is already waiting to become a support for veterans and their families, who need qualified support in this difficult time.

“Many professional challenges lie ahead for each of us. However, we believe that we will be able to be useful, and appreciate the opportunity to contribute to strengthening the well-being of veterans and their families,” Olena comments.

The UVF crisis assistance and support hotline is designed to help here and now, to provide support and ground underfoot at a moment when it seems that the whole world around is collapsing. The difficulties of experiencing crisis situations, anxieties, fears, problems in relationships, self-realisation, the meaning of life – our specialists will help you cope with these and other challenges.

“Our support hotline project is like a wounded person’s access to an emergency first aid kit on the battlefield. When you urgently need to stop the bleeding and relieve the pain shock. To survive and feel safe. To feel that you are needed, that they are ready to support you at any moment,” summed up the project manager, UVF employee Kateryna Teslenko.

A PART OF THE FUNDS COLLECTED DURING THE AUCTION IN MEMORY OF DENYS ANTIPOV WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE UVF

Part of the funds collected during the auction in memory of the deceased lieutenant of the 95th separate airborne assault brigade of Amphibious Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, translator and teacher Denys Antipov, were transferred to the Ukrainian Veterans  to support veteran businesses. This is 12 thousand hryvnias.

The auction was announced by Denis’s friend Oleksiy Plotnikov.

The auction lots are four postage stamps with the “Russian ship” that has moved in the right direction from the original first issue of “Ukrposhta”. Denis gave them to Oleksiy when he was in the hospital after a concussion received during the fighting in the Izyum area.

Therefore, Oleksiy Plotnikov transferred 12 thousand hryvnias to the Ukrainian Veterans’  to support business projects created by veterans.

“The goal of Ukrainian patriots should not be to die for our state, but to make sure that as many muscovite occupiers as possible die for theirs…”, Denys said in a lifetime interview recorded for the UVF.

An officer of the 95th brigade, Denys Antipov, died on May 11 near the village of Dovgenke, Izyum district, Kharkiv region. By decree of the President of Ukraine dated July 29, 2022, he was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree, posthumously.

UVF LAUNCHED PROJECT “20 THOUSAND” FOR MICROFINANCE OF VETERAN BUSINESSES

The Ukrainian Veterans Foundation has launched a project on microfinancing of veteran businesses. The amount of payment is up to 20,000 hryvnias.

From now on, veterans, members of their families, families of deceased combatants, who have become internally displaced persons and have confirmation of this status, will be able to receive monetary compensation for purchased goods necessary for their own business.

In general, the amount of 10 million hryvnias for about 500 applications is provided in the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation to support the own cause of veterans and their families, but funfdraising has been started in parallel to support as many businesses as possible.

“It is possible to receive financial assistance if a person has already purchased something from the means of his production or entrepreneurship in the place where he moved since February 24 of this year. With these funds, she will be able to compensate for the costs in whole or in part. This will be done from the funds that the state has pledged for 2022 for the work of the Foundation, which is 10 million hryvnias. We also started fundraising among international partners to replenish the Foundation’s resources. This is an important signal for veterans that their families are needed by the state, that they are in the spotlight and important steps are being taken for them. Maybe not global yet, because the majority of the budget is currently allocated to the security and defence sector, but it is additional support for families who take over the management of affairs until the veterans stand up for the defence of the country,” says the Foundation’s executive director Nataliya Kalmykova.

To receive one-time financial support, you need:

Collect a package of necessary documents, namely: passport,  the certificate of an internally displaced person, extract from the Unified State Register about the individual entrepreneur or self-employed person, confirmation of the status of a war veteran or the status of a family member of a war veteran, documents confirming the purchase after February 24, 2022 for business operation in accordance with Standard Industrial Classification codes.

Send your application with documents through the application form on the website in the business microfinancing section — https://veteranfund.com.ua/

Receive a response from the Foundation after checking the package of documents.

After approval you can receive funds.

We emphasise that applicants must meet three criteria at once:

1. A veteran or a veteran’s family member.

2. Individual entrepreneur or a self-employed person.

3. Internally displaced persons.

4. A check or other document confirming expenses for conducting activities after 24.03.2022. It is important that the expenses (goods) correspond to the Standard Industrial Classification codes of the Individual Entrepreneur.

People who correctly fill out the application, upload the entire package of documents together with purchase receipts or an expense invoice, will be able to receive a refund of up to 20,000 hryvnias within 10 days. Applications are accepted until the end of martial law.

WE ARE DEVELOPING DESPITE THE WAR

The main efforts of the Ukrainian Veterans’ Foundation since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion will be directed at projects of assistance to the families of veterans, their psychological and financial support.

This was announced on Monday, April 4, by the executive director of the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation, Natalia Kalmykova, during a live broadcast on the “Espresso” TV channel.

As the executive director of the UVF recalled, the Foundation was registered on February 2, 2022, and at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, three people worked in the institution.

“We currently have more than 23 employees. We are reformatting the strategic plan that was (prescribed) for a conditionally peaceful time, because the war continued anyway. We are now planning to launch projects to support families of veterans. We are talking about those families where the husband, father, wife or mother returned to the front. At the same time, families were forced to move from Kyiv, Chernihiv, or Kharkiv regions, and in a new place they needed to somehow start living, earning, and providing for themselves. Actually, this is where our main efforts will be directed,” Nataliya Kalmykova said.

In addition, the Ukrainian Veterans’ Foundation is currently waiting for the adjustment of the order according to which the Ukrainian Veterans’ Foundation will provide financial support to self-employed persons from among the families of veterans and veterans themselves. It is about grants for conducting business activities. As an example: reregistration of Individual Entrepreneur from the region where hostilities continue, in the western regions.

The UVF team also completed the preparation of the “hotline”.

“This will be a psychological decompression line… The idea is for people to turn to us and receive first (psychological) aid in an acute situation. Then we will direct them to the appropriate structures under the Ministry of Veterans Affairs for further, longer psychological support,” Nataliya Kalmykova said live.

The executive director emphasised that the Ukrainian Veterans Foundation faced different challenges than those before the Russian full-scale invasion.

“Currently, the number of families of veterans has increased, as more people have gone to the front; volunteers of territorial communities will be recognised as participants in hostilities. That is, the number of veterans from the target audience with whom we work has increased in a geometric progression”, Nataliya Kalmykova emphasises.

Also, the executive director of the UVF called for proactive communication with the international community regarding crimes committed by russians on the territory of Ukraine.

“We have to work against prejudice, showing the world the terrible destruction and torture inflicted by the russians on the territories they have reached. A proactive story is very important: the more aggressively and proactively we will show the crimes of the russians and at the same time show the values with which our people defend their Motherland, the more successful we will be,” added the executive director of the UVF.
